Some thoughts from my Grandma Burris
These are some thoughts that were written in a book owned by my Grandma Burris transcribed by my Dad
Lord grant that I may seek rather to comfort rather than to be comforted;
To understand rather than be understood;
To love rather than to be loved;
For
Ir is by giving that one receives;
It is by self forgetting that one finds;
It is by forgiving that one is forgiven
To be lonely is not to be unloved, but only to learn the value of love
The longest journey is the journey inward
It is more important to be aware of the grounds for your own behavior than to understand the motives of another
A noble and God like character is not a thing of favor or chance; but is the natural result of continued effort in right thinking, the effect of long cherished associations with God like thought – James Allen
As a neglected garden is soon invaded by weeds – So is faith carelessly guarded as quickly submerged in error
A man's temper improves the more he doesn't use it
Love is not spelled l-u-s-t
If you will let me, I will wish you in your future what all men desire – enough work to do, and strength enough to do your work. Rudyard Kipling
So long as we are loved by others I would almost say that we are indispensable; and no man is useless while he has a friend. Robert Louis Stevenson
The city of happiness is located in the state of mind
Knowledge is one thing that doesn't become second hand when you use it
Do you look for wrong or evil? You will find them if you do; as you measure to your neighbor he will measure back to you
One thing that has helped me as much as any other is not, “When am I going to die?” But how much can I do while I'm alive?” George Washington Carver
I love to think of nature as an unlimited broadcasting system through which God speaks to us every hour if we will only tune him on. George Washington Carver
If God had intended the human nose to be used as a chimney, He would have turned our nostrils up. George Washington Carver
The more you give the more you have
If you want to do something behind a persons back, pat it
The most painful wound in the world is a stab of conscience
The Golden Rule is an investment, not a sacrifice
A mans contentment lies in enthusiastic appreciation for the things he has. A mans misery lies in excessive desire for the things he has not.
Life is not a golden adventure that will cost you nothing
When wealth is lost, nothing is lost, when health is lost something is lost, when character is lost, all is lost
Winter is in my head but eternal spring is in my heart
Money is the universal passport to everywhere except heaven, and the provider of everything except happiness
A person does not find life worth living, he makes life worth living
Live as if you were expected to live a hundred years, but might die tomorrow
Three things are above the price of rubies; a clean body; a pure heart and a clear brain
Judge not your neighbor harshly, he may be on the jury when it's your time to face the judge
Most girls will go for any Tom, Dick or Harry, but some only go after Jack
“I haven't time” These idle words are not exactly true because I always find time for things I want to do
The Lord made woman beautiful so man would love her, and made her foolish so she would love him
As a rule a man's a fool; when it's hot he wants it cool, when it's cool he wants it hot. Always wanting what is not
Fame is what's taken; character what you give; when to this truth you awaken you will begin to live
It's good to have money, and things that money can buy; but it's good, too, to check up once in a while and make sure you haven't lost the things that money can't buy
Life, like a road with dangerous curves can be a pleasant journey for the fellow who travels it sensibly
Life is made pleasant by the ease with which one piece of good fortune can cause us to forget all the bad things that have happened to us
Let's talk about our happiness. By telling others how happy we are, we will discover that we are very happy. We'll also help our listeners to think happy thoughts. The happiness we induce in others induces, in turn, happiness in ourselves. Gibert Hay
People are like stained glass windows. They glow and sparkle when it's sunny and bright; but when the sun goes down then true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within. John Grimes
The only thing we can get for nothing is failure
There is no machine that can take the place of a good neighbor
Truth has only to change hands a few times to become fiction
Isn't it funny – no one ever asks a man how he manages to combine a marriage and a career
The man everybody likes generally likes everybody
Emotions that make you sick: depression, guilt, sadness, anger. Emotions which keep you well: faith, cheerfulness, usefulness, love
William Dean Howells said. See how today's achievement is only tomorrows confusion, see how possession always cheapens the thing that was precious.
Everyone is a moon. He has a dark side he doesn't show to anyone
If you can't stand solitude maybe you bore others too
All to often a clear conscience is merely a result of a bad memory
The difference between you and other people is that their money looks bigger and their troubles smaller
A man who is always satisfied with himself is seldom satisfied with others
If only I may grow firmer, simpler, quieter, warmer
Wisdom – Knowing when to speak your mind and when to mind your speech
Growing up seems to take such a long time, yet growing old seems to take such a short time
Don't resent growing old, many are denied the privilege
